About Us

Made In Mexico is a family owned business who love the beauty and colors of Mexico and its artists. It started by our annual trips to Mexico and bringing back gifts for our friends and family. Soon we were hauling suitcases full of product back and doing pop up shows in the summer. Now it is our pleasure to present the colorful heritage and old world design of Talavera pottery to Wisconsin and the midwest.

The artistry behind Mexican Talavera pottery is truly remarkable. Each piece is carefully crafted by skilled artisans who have honed their craft over generations. The result is a stunning display of intricate patterns and vibrant colors that capture the essence of Mexican culture.

The history of Talavera pottery dates back to the 16th century when Spanish artisans brought their ceramic techniques to Mexico. The city of Puebla quickly became the center of Talavera production, and it remains so to this day. The techniques used in creating Talavera pottery have been passed down from generation to generation, ensuring that the art form continues to thrive.

One of the defining characteristics of Talavera pottery is its use of vibrant colors. Traditional Talavera pieces often feature a white base glaze that serves as a canvas for the intricate patterns and designs. The colors used in Talavera pottery are derived from natural pigments, giving each piece a unique and authentic look. The vibrant blues, yellows, greens, and oranges are reminiscent of the colorful landscapes and architecture found throughout Mexico.

The patterns of Talavera pottery are not merely decorative; they also carry deep symbolism. For example, the sunflower pattern represents the sun and is associated with warmth, happiness, and prosperity. The pomegranate pattern symbolizes fertility and abundance, while the peacock pattern represents beauty and pride. These symbols add layers of meaning to the pottery, making each piece not just visually appealing but also culturally significant.

The artistry behind Mexican Talavera pottery is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans who create it. From the vibrant colors and intricate patterns to the carefully crafted shapes and forms, each piece is a work of art in its own right. Whether displayed as a decorative piece or used in everyday life, Talavera pottery adds a touch of beauty and culture to any space. It is a true testament to the power of art to transcend time and place, and a reminder of the rich artistic traditions that continue to thrive in Mexico.

The artistry behind the creation of Talavera pottery patterns is truly remarkable. It requires a high level of skill and expertise, as well as a deep understanding of the materials and techniques involved. The process begins with the preparation of the clay, which is carefully mixed and shaped into the desired form. Once the clay has dried, it is fired in a kiln to harden it.

After the initial firing, the pottery is coated with a white glaze, which serves as a canvas for the patterns. The glaze not only enhances the colors but also provides a smooth surface for the brushwork. The artisans then meticulously paint the patterns by hand, using mineral-based pigments that are mixed with water to create a fluid consistency. This requires a steady hand and a keen eye for detail, as even the slightest mistake can ruin the entire piece.

Once the patterns are painted, the pottery is fired again at a high temperature to fuse the colors with the glaze. This firing process is what gives Talavera pottery its distinctive glossy finish. The final result is a stunning piece of art that showcases the skill, creativity, and dedication of the artisans.

The patterns of Mexican Talavera pottery are a testament to the rich history and artistic traditions of Mexico. They are not just decorative elements but also carry deep symbolism, reflecting the cultural heritage and values of the Mexican people. The artistry behind their creation is truly remarkable, requiring a high level of skill, precision, and creativity. Whether displayed as a centerpiece or used in everyday life, Talavera pottery patterns add a touch of beauty and cultural significance to any space.
